Well known Philadelphia favorite and native, guitarist David Joel has performed in Japan, Europe, and throughout Boston and Washington D.C. A wide ranging background, including 35 years of playing experience, a former Instructor at Berklee College of Music (Boston), a Master’s Degree from New England Conservatory (Boston), and a Bachelor’s Degree from Berklee College of Music has yielded him the ability of performing and composing a large breadth of aesthetic musical styles. He performs regularly as a solo guitarist, with the David Joel Quartet and with various jazz and high society ensembles. Residing in Philadelphia, he is the director/composer of The David Joel Quartet, a contemporary jazz-fusion group and proprietor of the David Joel Guitar Studio (a music school). The Quartet recently recorded its first studio disc, "Spiral Sky," which was #1 on the PA Roots Radio Airplay Chart and # 7 on Canada's !earshot Jazz Chart in 2007. The David Joel Quartet (DJQ) has been selected for inclusion in the 2008 Pennsylvania Performing Arts on Tour (PennPAT) Roster (an organization which supports performance engagements by funding presenters in DC, DE, MD, NJ, Oh, PA, VA, WV and the US Virgin Islands).

    Artist Comments

Sound is one of life's primal expressions. Communication is the intentional impetus of an idea, thought, feeling, or concept, through space, hopefully delivered to someone who is willing to understand and experience its content. Music is probably one of the (if not the) highest sonic monuments of our culture. Collectively, it states who we are, where we've been and indicates where we are going; and don't we actually go somewhere within a piece of music - rather nomadic isn't it? It's up to the artist to set the tone for aesthetics in our society. Aesthetic (which deal with beauty) are the outward representation of our deepest feelings and values. Creating something of true value is an activity of great importance to those who, in actuality, help to shape the ideals of our world. Despite the importance placed on materialism in our society, the only thing which truly survives the centuries is man's culture - the things which reflect who and what he is and wishes to be; his zenith. Artists must continually express themselves, there is no other way. These are trying times for the artist (but then, haven't they always been) - to try to get our work out there, and for some of us, to make a living through our art. In our best, we are a community who wants to share who we are and reflect our feelings with others, in effect, our love, probably our greatest spiritual endowment.
