| Jefferson Braswell has been composing music and performing professionally since the 60s.
He taught music and led combos in Puerto Rico in the early 70s. In SF, he performed with several artists and bands, including the original Ashiko with O.J. Ekemode; Phone Bill ; Sam Peoples and Vehicle; Caribe; and, he led the band Culebra, which toured on the West Coast and won top prize at SF Carnaval for many years.
Jefferson has composed scores for modern dance and performed music for Anna Halperin and Dancer's Workshop events.
Moving to Tahoe in 90s, he continued his composition and recording, and started Tahoe Records. In addition to his own catalog of works, he has produced and released several albums of his artist colleagues, as well as producing many live recordings at the Nuyorican Cafe in Old San Juan, including: Polo Huerta -- bass player formerly with Eddie Palmieri, and his own Charanjunto de Polito Huerta; Luis Marin -- latin fusion pianist extraordinaire; Ray Coen -- legendary latin jazz piano maestro and arranger for Tito Puente, Roberto Roena, and many others; Giovanni Hidalgo, arguably the most talented conguero on the planet.
He also chose to champion a significant and seminal avant-garde African spiritual jazz project of historical significance called "A Gift From Trane", led by saxophonist Ghasem Batamuntu, collaborating with Nate Morgan Jr., Sonship Theus, Dadisi Komolafe, Onaje Murray, Isaac Smith, Joel Ector and Juma Santos. "A Gift From Trane" also includes substantial spoken word contributions from Kamau Daaood, Will Alexander, and K. Curtis Lyle. |
