| Evans Thompson from White Plains N.Y. played drums in his high school band at Valhalla ,N.Y. However, when he moved to Manhattan in the early seventies, he met Master musician ,Barry Harris and soon fell in love w/ the piano. He then sat next to Barry in his improv & piano class for the next tenyears and learned the art, heart, and soul of jazz. Evans was already composing songs before he cuold actually play. Hence started his musical career as a jazz pianist steeped in the tradition of. Art Tatum , Bud Powell and Thelonious Monk. In 1989, Evans started his own original band called "True Stoy". His repertoire is original be- bop. original rumba, and compositions in the Afro Cuban Tradition. He has recorded five cd's of his original music on his own record label, under His publishing company,(Evchan Publishing Company), and is registered as a composer and publisher w/ BMI in N.Y.C. He studied classical pianist w/ a legendary old timer, Nicolas Rodriguez, and w/ concert pianist John Kamitsuka. Along w/ studying w/ Barry Harris, Evans also studied Afro Cuban piano w/ the great Sonny Bravo. Evans also is still studying the music and rythmns of the Yoruba people of West Africa. Playing at yoruba and Voudun ceremonies w/ the indigeonous peaple has enabled him to learn many of the songs and rythmns he now meshes w/ his original compositions. Evans has played w/ some of the great contemporary musicians of the day. either as a side man, but mostly w/ his band "True Story'. He has beenin musical events w/ Barry Harris. Dexter Gordon., and early in his career even sat in w/ Major Holly,legendary bassist. He also wrote and arranged Music for Joseph Papp's, New York Tribute to China Town, in 2002. He has done numerous concerts at, Merkin Concert Hall, NuYorican Poet's Cafe, St Marks Church, NYC, and is presently performing w/ his band at Ashford & Simpson's Sugar Bar on Nov 6th of this year (2010).Evans has a broad home base croud that encompasses all neighborhoods and people. "I'll stay here and grow my base". Says Evans. What is most important to Evans is that his music is heard by the everyday person in the street, not an elite audience that only can be seen in an exclusive club.
