J A McArdle is a concept sketch artist exploring new musical relationships through improvised or spontaneous composition. Influenced by all styles of improvised music from ancient Native American spirituals to modern harmolodics and free jazz, his concepts focus on melody and are primarily grounded in pop music sensibilities.

-Originally from Los Angeles (born 1958- Native American/Irish). -played in various blues and rock bands during the 70’s LA punk/new wave scene. -became dis-enchanted with the commercial/material aspects of composition and performance. -1978: chose to change musical paths from the professional/academic music biz to a more personal music quest. -Took a 4 year sabbatical to pursue a career in the visual arts (conceptual product design). -1983: re-located to the Silicon Valley and returned to creating music with a purely conceptual (spiritual) intent, while negotiating with the material world as a product designer. -Since the mid 80’s: Involved in ongoing collective improvisations and infrequent performances with his wife Jovani and a small community of local grass-roots kindred spirits.

    Artist Comments

I am mainly concerned with creating fundamental melodic ideas and rhythmic relationships as a conceptual platform for spontaneous exploration and meditation. The ideas are conceived from a spiritual point of view without any commercial intent. I think of them as little prayers for all to share in. I invite performing musicians who resonate with these ideas, to take them and mold them into their own expression (along with sharing authorship). I would love to hear this music performed and produced by others who have the resources and skills beyond my own.

All of my sketches are created in a very loose recording format, using a technique I call ‘layered improvisation” where each part is recorded one by one while improvising over the previous parts. Editing is limited to expanding short improvised rhythm sequences into final arrangements prior to the melodic parts. The goal is to create timeless and cliché-free musical relationships that are satisfying to those who are well initiated into more progressive, non-commercial musical forms without alienating the casual mainstream listener.
